TETRA MS Protocol Testing now available with the VIAVI CX300

The VIAVI CX300 ComXpert gains an important capability for testing TETRA radios with the new TETRA MS Protocol Testing option. RF measurements and functional protocol tests can now be performed using a single test instrument.

For test and repair workflows, this means that evaluation is no longer limited to the RF characteristics of a TETRA radio. The CX300 can also be used to verify key communication functions of the device.

Simulation of a TETRA base station

For protocol testing, the CX300 simulates a TETRA base station. This allows the radio under test to be functionally exercised in a way that reflects how it operates when connected to a TETRA network.

According to the provided information, no additional hardware is required. The radio also does not need to be placed into a dedicated diagnostic mode. RF and protocol testing can therefore be performed within the same test environment.

RF and functional testing with one instrument

The new TETRA MS Protocol Testing option adds several protocol and functional tests to the CX300. The announced capabilities include:

  • TETRA registration and Network Attach
  • Individual call testing
  • Group call testing
  • Emergency call testing
  • SDS testing
  • BER and MER testing

At the same time, the CX300 supports the RF measurements identified for TETRA testing, including transmit power, frequency, EVM and sensitivity. RF performance and functional testing can therefore be brought together on a common test platform.

Streamlined test and repair workflows

The combination of RF and protocol testing is particularly relevant when checking repaired TETRA radios. Instead of relying on separate test arrangements for different stages of the process, multiple checks can be performed with the VIAVI CX300 ComXpert.

VIAVI and EMCO highlight three main operational benefits: reduced test effort, faster turnaround times and greater confidence when releasing repaired TETRA radios.

Extending testing beyond RF measurements

RF measurements allow relevant radio-frequency parameters of the device to be evaluated under the defined test conditions. With the additional TETRA protocol capability, key communication functions such as registration, Network Attach and individual, group and emergency calls can also be checked.

The TETRA MS Protocol Testing option therefore extends the CX300 from RF-focused testing towards a combination of RF analysis and functional TETRA testing.
